(Observer by Newsco) The Antigua and Barbuda Workers Union (ABWU) reaffirmed its commitment to empowering young people through skills development and entrepreneurship during its annual Youth Congress 2025, held under the theme “Adaptability to Ensure Sustainability: Encouraging Entrepreneurship in Youth”.
Speaking at the event, yesterday, Deputy General Secretary Chester Hughes underlined the union’s ongoing dedication to providing training opportunities that equip youth with the necessary skills to navigate the evolving world of work. “The world of work is changing rapidly,” Hughes said. “Technology, the economy, and the environment are demanding new solutions. If we don’t adapt, we risk being left behind. But if we embrace change with creativity and boldness, we can lead the future.”

Hughes highlighted the importance of entrepreneurship as a means for young people to create their own opportunities. “Instead of waiting for chances, you must see problems as opportunities to solve,” he remarked. “The future belongs to those who dare to adapt, create, and build.”
The union’s role, he stressed, extends beyond advocacy to active support and mentorship. “We will continue to offer training and connect youth with experienced leaders to guide their journey into entrepreneurship,” he declared. Hughes cited the transformation of traditional industries as examples of technological shifts—banking, hospitality, and transportation—and how automation and artificial intelligence are reshaping these sectors. He urged young workers to embrace these changes and prepare for a future where digital skills are paramount.
Furthermore, Hughes called on the government and financial institutions to streamline policies and funding opportunities that support youth entrepreneurship, emphasizing that access should be straightforward and supportive.
The event featured lively discussions, presentations, and cultural performances aimed at inspiring young workers to innovate and lead. Hughes issued an inspiring challenge: “Dream big, act boldly, take risks, and learn from failures. The union is behind you. Together, let’s adapt, build sustainably, and shape a better future—starting today.”
As Antigua and Barbuda positions itself for a future driven by innovation and resilience, the union’s message underscores the vital role of youth entrepreneurship in building a sustainable and prosperous nation.
