Employees at Antigua Distillery Limited are set to receive an 8% salary increase following the signing of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between the Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union (ABWU) and the company’s management.
The salary increase will be distributed in the following increments over three years: 3.5% in the first year, 2.5% in the second year, and 2% in the third year.
In addition to the salary increases, the Union secured improvements to several employment benefits, including an increase in the meal allowance and adjustments to shift and call-out allowances. Paternity leave has also been extended from three to five days, and the company has agreed to cover the annual cost of renewing drivers' licences for designated drivers.
Shop Steward Jason Philip described the negotiations as "fair" and encouraged employees, particularly younger workers, to recognise the broader value of benefits secured through collective bargaining.
"There are benefits that we can agree on that will have a more meaningful impact on your life than any dollar amount," Philip explained. He stressed that while wage increases remain important, improvements to leave entitlements and other conditions of employment can deliver significant long-term value to workers and their families.
Meanwhile, Human Resources Manager, Karen Joseph urged workers to exercise reasonableness and understanding as the company works to achieve a harmonious working environment for all.
ABWU Senior Industrial Relations Officer, Fernando Samuel expressed appreciation to the management of Antigua Distillery for its cooperative approach throughout the negotiations, noting that the willingness of both parties to engage constructively contributed to the timely conclusion of the agreement.
Looking ahead, Samuel indicated that the Union intends to pursue the introduction of a structured salary scale during the next round of negotiations. The proposed system would create opportunities for employees to receive additional compensation based on their performance, providing an additional pathway for wage progression beyond negotiated general increases.
The new Collective Bargaining Agreement covers the period March 2026 to February 2029.
