The Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union (ABWU) continues to play a leading role in the international trade union movement. On Wednesday, ABWU General Secretary Bro. David Massiah was re-elected as chair of the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) Tourism Section, a position he will hold for the next five years.

The election was part of the Tourism Services Conference, which was held during the ITF Congress 2024, currently taking place in Marrakech, Morocco.

Massiah expressed gratitude to the delegates for the confidence placed in the newly elected committee and reassured transport workers in the tourism sector that efforts will accelerate to expand access to union representation and to elevate employment standards.

“Among our priorities going forward will be to amplify workers’ voices in the transition to a sustainable tourism industry, as well as to ensure corporate accountability for workers across the entire value chain, and not just for those directly employed by companies,” Massiah noted.

Other areas of focus will include eradicating human trafficking and protecting worker health and safety.

Since the last conference in 2018, the ITF Tourism Section has built tremendous momentum, doubling the number of tourism workers who are part of the movement. The 2024 Congress concludes on October 19.
