Two students from the Harrison Centre/Antigua and Barbuda Institute of Continuing Education (ABICE) recently completed internship training at the Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union (ABWU).
The interns, Indira Shaw and Kevounia Matthias, both enrolled in ABICE’s Secretarial Program, began their internship with the Union on June 30. Over the course of their placement, they gained valuable hands-on experience in office procedures and administrative tasks, including filing, client management, meeting preparation, document handling, reception duties, and general office support.
ABWU General Secretary, Sen. David Massiah, commended the interns for their dedication and enthusiasm throughout the program.
“While much of our work at the Union focuses on protecting workers’ rights and enhancing benefits, we are equally devoted to facilitating the development of employees through training and education,” Massiah said. “The positive spirit and willingness of these interns to go above and beyond was truly commendable.”
Reflecting on her experience, Indira Shaw said, “I learnt a lot and I understand now how important the Trade Union is in any society. This internship gave me the opportunity to put theoretical knowledge into practice, and I am grateful to our teachers at the Harrison Centre/ABICE and the management and staff at the ABWU.”
Her colleague, Kevounia Matthias, also spoke highly of the internship. “I enjoyed every bit of my experience here, from the meetings that I attended to the youth conference,” Matthias said. “I encourage everyone to educate themselves on the Union and the important contribution it makes to our society.”
The internship concluded on Friday, August 29, with both Shaw and Matthias expressing their eagerness to put their newly acquired skills into practice.
The ABWU remains committed to supporting the training and advancement of workers through internships, mentorship, and educational partnerships that build the foundation for a stronger workforce and society.
