ABWU Empowers Future Professionals Through Labour Rights Education

Published On: May 12, 2026

Dozens of final-year students at the Antigua & Barbuda College of Advanced Studies are now better prepared for the world of work, having recently benefited from an introductory presentation on industrial relations delivered by President of the Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union (ABWU), Kem Riley.

The students, who were preparing to begin internships as part of their course requirements, were guided through Section C of the Antigua & Barbuda Labour Code, which outlines fundamental employee rights. Key topics included essential employment documents, hours of work, premium pay and overtime, sick leave, and the right to unionise.

The session extended beyond a traditional lecture, fostering active engagement as students sought clarity on a range of workplace issues. Riley described the initiative as “critical,” noting that many young workers are vulnerable to exploitation due to a lack of awareness about their rights.

“We have been conducting this session for a few years, and we consider it a core part of the ABWU’s mandate to educate young workers,” Riley said. “It is through this type of education that we are able to defend and expand workers’ rights and benefits.”

Students expressed strong appreciation for the session, highlighting its practical value. “I think we have been able to gather a wealth of knowledge in a short space of time,” one Public Administration student shared. Another added, “I now have a better understanding of what it means to be part of a union and how to stand up for my rights.”

The Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union extends best wishes to all final-year students as they embark on their internships and look ahead to graduation.
