The Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union (ABWU) is proud to welcome a second bargaining unit from the Antigua and Barbuda Port Authority into its fold.
With this development, the ABWU is – for the first time in history – the only union representing workers at the Port. This comes after workers voted on Monday to decertify the Antigua Trades and Labour Union (AT&LU) and overwhelmingly elected the ABWU as their exclusive bargaining agent, with a final tally of 55 to 6.
ABWU Deputy General Secretary, Chester Hughes, expressed gratitude for the support and noted that the union will immediately begin addressing the most pressing issues affecting the new unit.
Hughes added: “This latest victory reflects the growing confidence that workers continue to place in the Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union.”
The Port Authority workers have maintained a strong union culture for many years. Now, with both bargaining units under the umbrella of ABWU, workers are poised to make more powerful and coordinated demands for fairer treatment and improved benefits from the Port’s Management.
