Trinidad: Raise minimum wage to $30, JTUM leader urges

Published On: Jun 21, 2023

(Loopnews) The Joint Trade Union Movement (JTUM) is calling for the minimum wage be increased from $17.50 to $30 an hour.

Ancel Roget, JTUM's leader and president general of the Oilfields Workers’ Trade Union (OWTU) made the call while speaking during Labour Day celebrations at Charlie King Junction, Fyzabad on Monday.

Roget said it was disrespectful for people to work for less than $30 an hour in Trinidad and Tobago.

In rallying support, Roget also encouraged other trade unions and their memberships to fight against the oppression of workers, including an unfair minimum wage and poor working conditions.

“…For this Government, it is not okay for workers who turn the wheels of the economy to receive a decent wage,” Roget said.

The theme of this year’s Labour Day event was “People Power! People Matter.”

The union leader raised other issues plaguing workers and the country.

With increased murders and violence, Roget said people have been living in fear as the country remains under siege.

He also criticised the government for its failure to deal with the crime situation.

“People truly believe that this Government is hopeless and helpless in protecting them. This country has become a very risky place to live, but let’s be clear, Trinidad and Tobago has now become a risky place to live under a Rowley-led Government,” Roget added.
