Two final-year students from the Antigua State College (ASC) recently completed a six-week internship with the Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union (ABWU), where they were immersed in the Union’s daily operations and gained a deeper understanding of workers’ rights and advocacy.
The students, Neah Antwine and Denincia Henry, both pursuing studies in International Business, were engaged in a wide range of activities during their time at the Union. From providing administrative support and assisting with communications, to observing firsthand how the Union serves its members, the internship offered a well-rounded introduction to the professional environment.

ABWU General Secretary, Senator David Massiah, expressed his support and enthusiasm for the programme. “Over the past six weeks, our interns brought fresh energy and a genuine eagerness to learn. We hope that this initial exposure to the world of trade unionism will help them better navigate the world of work,” Massiah said.
Both interns reflected positively on their experience. “This was a very challenging experience, but I enjoyed it and learned a lot,” Denincia Henry said. “It pushed me to grow in new ways and gave me a better understanding of how unions operate behind the scenes.”
Neah Antwine added, “I enjoyed the experience as well. I was able to understand the real purpose of the Union and how they help workers who need someone to fight for them. I now have a greater appreciation for the role the Union plays in society.”
During the internship, the students contributed in several key areas, including data entry, client interaction, and the creation of digital content for the Union’s social media platforms.
R. Anderson Edghill, the Union’s Communications Officer, commended the students for their contributions. “It was a pleasure working with this year’s interns. They were quick learners who adapted seamlessly to the demands of a professional communications environment,” Edghill said.
The internship ran from 28 April to 6 June, 2025.
